Newark to Staten Island car service at a glance

Newark Liberty and Staten Island sit across the Arthur Kill from each other, so this is the shortest airport transfer we run: about 12 miles to the North Shore and 20 to 25 minutes when the roads are clear. The South Shore towns are 20 to 25 miles and around 40 minutes.

Three bridges connect them. The Goethals carries most trips and lands closest to the Staten Island Expressway; the Bayonne Bridge serves the North Shore neighbourhoods; the Outerbridge Crossing is the right answer for anything south of about Great Kills.

There is no rail link between New Jersey and Staten Island, so a twelve-mile journey by public transport means a bus, a train through Manhattan or a ferry, and then another bus — an hour and a half or more for a trip a car does in twenty minutes with your bags in the back.

Every pickup is matched to the live inbound flight, so a delay moves the car rather than costing you it, and wait time covers immigration and baggage. A chauffeur will come inside to the arrivals hall if you ask for it.

Golden Class Limo runs it in sedans, Escalade ESVs, Sprinter vans, mini buses and 55-seat coaches, quoted on the terminal and the address with tolls inside the figure. Someone is on the dispatch line at any hour you land.

Every option, honestly

Four ways to get from Newark to Staten Island — and when each one wins.

We sell one of these. The other three are real, and on the right day with the right luggage one of them is the better trip.

  • Chauffeured airport transfer (Golden Class Limo)

    What we run
    Typical time
    20–50 minutes, terminal to door
    Cost
Fixed on the terminal and the island address before you fly

Best for. Any arrival with checked bags, families, groups off one flight, late landings, and every address on the island south of the ferry terminal.

The catch. For a single traveller with hand luggage prepared to spend ninety minutes on buses and a train, this costs considerably more. What it buys is a twelve-mile trip that actually takes twelve miles' worth of time, with the bags in the vehicle.

  • Bus and train the long way round

    Typical time
Ninety minutes to two hours with the connections
    Cost
A series of separate transit fares

Best for. A solo traveller on a tight budget with one bag and a whole afternoon to spend on the journey.

The catch. There is no direct public link across the Arthur Kill, so the trip goes north through New Jersey, into Manhattan or across to Bayonne, and back down again. Three changes with luggage for twelve miles is the definition of a bad connection.

  • Rideshare from the terminal

    Typical time
The same road time, once you have a car
    Cost
Variable, and quoted higher for a crossing into New York

Best for. A single passenger landing at a reasonable hour who is happy to walk to the app pickup area and wait for a match.

The catch. Trips that cross a state line are the ones drivers decline most, and at Newark the app pickup area is a walk from the terminal with a case. Nothing larger than an SUV exists, so a family arriving with four suitcases is already a problem.

  • Driving yourself with airport parking

    Typical time
The same road time each way
    Cost
Fuel, two bridge tolls and airport parking for the duration

Best for. A short trip where somebody is staying home to collect you and the car is not left at the airport.

The catch. Airport parking for a week costs more than most people expect, and leaving a car there for a fortnight rarely makes sense for a twenty-minute drive. It also means somebody is driving at the end of a long flight.

Landing at Newark with the island to reach?

Give us the flight number and the street; the car is matched to the live arrival time.

The road

There is no single way in.

5 corridors, each right for somewhere different. Your chauffeur has your address before the day and chooses with live conditions rather than at the time you booked.

  1. New Jersey Turnpike Exit 13 to the Goethals Bridge

ServesThe North Shore, the Expressway corridor and mid-island addresses

A Turnpike ticket and a Port Authority toll on the New York-bound side

The standard line from the terminals and the quickest for most of the island. The short Turnpike hop is rarely the problem; the ramp merge onto the bridge approach at the end of the working day is, which is why an evening arrival is quoted with a few extra minutes.

  2. Bayonne Bridge into Port Richmond

ServesPort Richmond, West Brighton, Mariners Harbor and the North Shore streets

Port Authority toll charged into New York

The quiet crossing, raised and rarely busy, and the better answer for North Shore addresses that would otherwise mean doubling back from the Expressway. It adds a couple of miles and usually saves time in the evening.

  3. Outerbridge Crossing from the Turnpike's southern exits

ServesTottenville, Prince's Bay, Annadale and the southern third of the island

Port Authority toll into New York

For anything south of Great Kills this is not the alternative, it is the route: crossing at the Goethals and driving back down the island adds fifteen miles. The approach through Perth Amboy is untroubled outside the local commute.

  4. Martin Luther King Jr Expressway along the North Shore

ServesThe waterfront neighbourhoods between the Bayonne Bridge and St George

    Untolled

The local road that links the two northern crossings, and the one a chauffeur uses to reach the St George and Stapleton streets without joining the Expressway. Slow in the middle of the day and much quicker at either end of it.

  5. West Shore Expressway to the southern neighbourhoods

ServesBloomfield, Travis, Woodrow and the western side of the island

    Untolled

The road that carries an Outerbridge arrival north, or a Goethals arrival south, without touching the busier Staten Island Expressway. It is the reason a Woodrow address is often quicker to reach than a Dongan Hills one despite being further from the airport.

By the hour

What the trip actually takes, hour by hour.

Typical door-to-door ranges under ordinary conditions. Weather, incidents and holiday weekends all sit outside this table.

  • Overnight arrivals

    12am – 6am

    18–28 min to St George

The fastest version of this transfer. Empty roads at both ends, and the hours when a booked car matters most because the island's app supply is thin.

  • Morning

    6am – 10am

    25–45 min to St George

The New Jersey commute fills the Turnpike stretch and the bridge approaches, but the crossing itself rarely queues in this direction at this hour.

  • Midday

    10am – 3pm

    20–35 min to St George

Steady and predictable, and the easiest band in which to promise an arrival for a family or a group meeting a schedule.

  • Afternoon peak

    3pm – 7pm

    35–60 min to St George

The Goethals approach and the Staten Island Expressway load together. The Bayonne Bridge becomes the sensible North Shore alternative in this window.

  • Evening

    7pm – 10pm

    20–35 min to St George

Clears quickly after seven, and the evening arrivals bank at Newark usually gets a straightforward run across.

  • Late evening

    10pm – 12am

    18–30 min to St George

Quiet roads, with overnight bridge maintenance the only thing that changes the plan. Dispatch has those before a late pickup goes out.

Vehicles on this route

One vehicle for the whole arrival.

Everyone on the flight leaves in one vehicle rather than two cars and a taxi. The widget above quotes your terminal and your island address with both tolls and the gratuity inside the figure.

Fares shown are for the Staten Island zone and are the same figures the booking form returns. A pickup or drop-off outside it prices differently, which is what the form is for.

Whole party landing together?

A Sprinter, mini bus or coach takes the group and the luggage across in a single move.

The meet

Meeting you at Newark

On a twenty-minute transfer, the time spent finding each other at the airport can be longer than the drive. These are the arrangements that stop that happening.

  • The flight is watched, not assumed

Your inbound is tracked from its origin, so an early arrival brings the chauffeur forward and a delay moves the whole booking without changing the agreed price. Wait time covers passport control and the carousel.

  • Message when you have your bags

The chauffeur holds in the airport's waiting area and moves to the terminal when you say you are through. On a short transfer that is what keeps the vehicle at the kerb for minutes rather than laps.

  • Meet-and-greet for families and groups

On request the chauffeur comes inside with a name board and takes the trolley. It is worth it for an international arrival with children, and for a party gathering from more than one flight before boarding a single vehicle.

  • Coaches use the commercial pickup point

Mini buses and coaches cannot use the arrivals kerb, so we confirm the airport's designated commercial point in writing before you fly and keep the chauffeur in touch with whoever is leading the group.

Going back

Staten Island back to Newark

Going the other way the flight is the fixed point, and on a trip this short the temptation is to leave too late.

Short drive, ordinary buffers

A twenty-minute transfer still needs the usual check-in allowance. For a domestic departure we generally set the island pickup around three hours before wheels-up, and three and a half for an international one.

The afternoon crossing is the one to plan for

Between three and seven the Goethals approach queues in the New Jersey direction. For a late-afternoon flight we either leave earlier or route over the Bayonne Bridge, and we say which when we confirm.

Terminal and airline decide the door

Newark's terminals are separated by a loop road, and being dropped at the wrong one means a shuttle with your cases. We take the airline at booking so you arrive at the right departures level.

Book both legs and keep one operator

A return booked with the arrival means the outbound is already scheduled while you are away, which is worth more on the island than in the city because street pickups here are not something you can rely on.

Booking both directions at once is one reservation on one account, on (718) 360-9383 or through the form above.

In depth

Twelve miles, and why they are hard without a car

Neighbours with no connection

Newark Liberty and Staten Island are close enough to see each other across the water, which is what makes Newark to Staten Island car service such a common booking. The drive is twelve miles to the North Shore and twenty-odd to Tottenville, and outside the peaks it takes twenty to forty minutes. It is the shortest airport transfer we run.

It is also one of the worst journeys in the region without a vehicle. There is no rail link across the Arthur Kill, so a public route means going north into New Jersey and back down, or into Manhattan and out on the ferry — ninety minutes to two hours with two or three changes, for a trip that is barely longer than a cross-town run. That gap between the distance and the difficulty is the whole reason this page exists.

Three bridges, and the shore decides

The Goethals Bridge carries most of this traffic and lands closest to the Staten Island Expressway, which makes it right for the North Shore and the middle of the island. The Bayonne Bridge is quieter and better for Port Richmond and the waterfront streets. The Outerbridge Crossing is the correct route for anything south of about Great Kills — going over the Goethals and driving back down adds fifteen miles for no reason.

Because the island is long and thin, the crossing is chosen from the address rather than from habit. We ask for the street at booking, not just the town, and on an evening arrival the chauffeur may switch from the Goethals to the Bayonne when the Expressway is backed up — a decision that only works if the person driving knows both roads.

Arrivals, luggage and families

Most of what we carry on this route is family travel: relatives arriving for an occasion, households coming home from a holiday, grandparents flying in with more luggage than a car boot holds. The flight is tracked from departure so a delay simply moves the pickup, and complimentary wait time covers immigration and the carousel rather than starting a clock the moment the wheels touch.

That protection matters more than it sounds on a short trip. If a ride falls through at eleven at night at Newark, a twelve-mile crossing into another state is exactly the fare drivers decline, and the fallback is an airport hotel or an expensive hour of waiting. A booked chauffeur is already in the holding area with the flight number against the job.

Groups and what one vehicle saves

Group arrivals here are usually a family or a work crew landing together for an occasion or a job on the island. A 14-passenger Sprinter takes the party and its luggage in one move; a mini bus or a coach does the same for larger numbers with the cases in the hold, and both are cheaper than the three or four cars they replace once two sets of tolls are counted.

The practical part is the meeting point. Larger vehicles cannot use the arrivals kerb, so we confirm the airport's commercial pickup point before you fly, hold the vehicle while the group clears, and leave when everyone is aboard rather than running two trips across the same twelve miles.

Good to know

Newark to Staten Island questions, answered.

How long does it take to get from Newark Airport to Staten Island?

Usually 20 to 45 minutes to St George and the North Shore, and 30 to 55 minutes to the southern neighbourhoods around Great Kills and Tottenville. Late evening and overnight arrivals are quickest at around twenty minutes; the weekday afternoon peak at the Goethals approach is the slowest window.

How far is Staten Island from Newark Airport?

About 12 miles to the North Shore, 14 to the mid-island neighbourhoods and 20 to 22 to the southern end. The airport and the island face each other across the Arthur Kill, which makes this the shortest airport transfer we run anywhere in the region.

What is the best way to get from Newark Airport to Staten Island?

A booked car, by a wide margin. There is no rail link across the water, so public transport means heading north into New Jersey or east into Manhattan and coming back — ninety minutes to two hours with changes, for a twelve-mile trip. Rideshare drivers frequently decline out-of-state fares, which leaves a private transfer as the only dependable option.

Which bridge will the chauffeur use?

The Goethals Bridge for the North Shore, the Expressway corridor and the middle of the island; the Bayonne Bridge for Port Richmond and the waterfront streets, particularly in the evening peak; and the Outerbridge Crossing for anything south of about Great Kills, because crossing at the Goethals and driving back down adds fifteen miles.

Do you track my flight?

Yes, from the moment it leaves its origin airport, so an arrival an hour early and an arrival an hour late are handled the same way: the car moves with it, at the price already agreed. Wait time covering passport control and the carousel is part of the booking rather than an extra.

Are the tolls included in the price?

Yes. The Turnpike hop and the Port Authority bridge toll are inside the quote along with the chauffeur's gratuity, so there is nothing to settle in the vehicle. Tolls on these crossings are charged in the New York-bound direction, which is the direction an arrival travels.

Can you meet us inside the terminal?

Yes, on request. Your chauffeur comes through to the arrivals hall holding a name board and takes the trolley from there. It is worth asking for on an international arrival with children, and whenever a party landing on more than one flight has to gather before boarding a single vehicle.

Can you take a group of twenty from Newark to the island?

Yes. Mini buses from 23 to 38 seats and coaches to 55 carry the whole party with luggage in the hold. Larger vehicles use the airport's designated commercial pickup point rather than the arrivals kerb, and we confirm that spot with you in writing before the day.

How early should I leave the island for a flight from Newark?

For a domestic departure, about three hours before wheels-up, and three and a half for an international one. The drive is short but the check-in allowance is not, and between three and seven the Goethals approach queues in the New Jersey direction — so an afternoon flight either leaves earlier or routes over the Bayonne Bridge.

Do you also serve the South Shore late at night?

Yes, around the clock. Late arrivals to Tottenville, Prince's Bay and Annadale are among the most-booked trips on this route precisely because street pickups and app coverage in those neighbourhoods are unreliable after midnight, and a pre-booked chauffeur is already waiting when you land.
